What is a BTEC in Child Development?
This qualification is the same size and level as a GCSE and is aimed at those who want to find out more about Child Development. The early years sector focuses on the learning, development and care of children. In the UK there are approximately 1.7 million Ofsted registered childcare places for children offered by many different types of early years settings in England, ranging from childminders, nannies, nurseries, crèches and preschools. Knowledge of child development is important in a variety of occupations outside of childcare and teaching, for example, in healthcare roles such as paediatricians, psychologists, occupational therapists, and speech and language therapists.

Course Aims
This course gives you the opportunity to understand the principles of a child’s growth and development from birth to 5 years of age, looking at physical, intellectual, emotional and social growth and development. Learners will also look at how specific factors can affect a child’s growth and development and the overall impact this can have on a child. You will also develop an understanding of how play activities can influence children’s learning between the ages of birth and five years old. Learners will consider the different types of play in which children engage, and how activities can support children’s learning and progress across the five areas of development. Finally, learners will investigate how a child learns and develops and how to adapt activities to support the inclusion of all children in play.
Assessment
All learners must complete THREE compulsory components:
Component 1: Children’s Growth and Development – internal assessment set by Pearson consisting of 3 tasks, marked by the centre and moderated by Pearson. The Pearson-set Assignment will be completed in 6 hours of supervised assessment. (60 marks)
Component 2: Learning through Play – internal assessment set by Pearson consisting of 3 tasks, marked by the centre and moderated by Pearson. The Pearson-set Assignment will be completed in approximately 6 hours of supervised assessment. (60 marks)
Component 3: Supporting Children to Play, Learn and Develop – External assessment set and marked by Pearson, completed under supervised conditions. The assessment will be completed in 2 hours within the period timetabled by Pearson. (60 marks)
Upon successful completion of all components, you will be awarded a grade ranging from a Level 1 Pass to a level 2 Distinction.
